Having established ourselves as an industry leader in legal actions against the State of Victoria, Robinson Gill Lawyers is excited to announce the creation of our new Crime and Advocacy Department (CAD).
The CAD is a dedicated team of lawyers working across a number of specialised advocacy areas, including criminal law, Coronial Inquests, Royal Commissions, and Intervention Orders. The team will also handle quasi-crime matters, including IBAC prosecutions and Section 85B applications for restitution.
The department will build upon our existing specialist practices, including police misconduct, family law, and personal injury to provide a holistic response to the broader needs of our clients. Drawing from a wealth of experience, we have identified multiple areas in which the CAD will offer valuable legal assistance to clients across related practice areas. For example, we often find that:
- Victims of police misconduct are charged with offences requiring criminal law representation;
- Families who have suffered a death in custody require representation in the Coroners Court to pursue subsequent civil claims; and
- Family law clients either require, or need to respond to, Intervention Orders in marital breakdowns.
We are pleased to announce that our new Crime and Advocacy Department will be led by our very own Ali Besiroglu.
With over a decade of experience helping individuals fight criminal charges, representing families in Coronial Inquests, and assisting clients in claims for compensation against the State of Victoria, Ali brings a wealth of expertise and a demonstrated commitment to securing justice for his clients.
From a young age, Ali knew that being a lawyer was his calling. His significant court advocacy experience has seen him appear in every Magistrates' Court throughout metropolitan and regional Victoria, as well as in the County Court. He has instructed in criminal and civil trials in the Victorian County and Supreme Courts, including appeals in the Court of Appeal.
Whilst he was studying law, Ali started out as a policy officer at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS). Over the years, he worked his way up to become a senior solicitor, discovering his passion for working with Aboriginal communities.
Ali has unique expertise in cases involving the death of individuals during attempted arrests, both in Corrections Custody and by the Police. He has always been passionate about social justice and has a deep commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Tim Robinson, Managing and Founding Principal at Robinson Gill, said: “We have witnessed Ali’s uncompromising determination to advocate for the voiceless, taking pride in his life experiences that have kept him grounded no matter how far he has gotten in his career. We have witnessed his dedication to pursuing social justice, especially for minorities, the less privileged, and marginalized communities. We couldn’t have found anyone better to lead the new department.”
