How and when did you move into your current position?
I became a principal in 2015. The firm was growing and I was excited to have the opportunity to expand my skills in management, business and governance.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I enjoy collaborating with my colleagues and exchanging ideas. I'm fortunate to work with several talented and experienced lawyers and we continually learn from each other. Helping clients through what is often an intense period of grief and stress is very rewarding. For clients who have been in an abusive relationship, it is particularly rewarding to see them move on to a safer and happier chapter of their lives.
What advice would you give to people wanting to practice in your area?
- Be courageous and prepared to step outside your comfort zone, but ask lots of questions, even if you think your question may be perceived as trivial.
- Never hide or gloss over your mistakes. Consult your colleagues about how to address them, and use the experience to learn.
- If you are interested in management, joining a board is an excellent learning opportunity.
- Be prepared in everything you do. Preparation increases confidence and success.
What has been the best career advice you have received to date?
- My parents always encouraged me to have a strong work ethic and a "give and take" attitude, which put me in good stead in my career.
- Sheryl Sandberg's book Lean In gave really useful career advice.
- Living within reasonable proximity to your workplace is a huge benefit if you have a family, and can make a significant impact on your ability to maintain a fulfilling career.
Not in a formal sense. Tim Robinson, the managing partner, supervised most of my training. He challenged and pushed me to improve my skills as a lawyer, whilst also always having my back.
If you had your time again, would you do anything different?
Nothing comes to mind... I was lucky to find my first job at such a great firm.
What do you like to do outside the law?
Reading, netflixing, travelling and spending time with family and friends.
What is your favourite legal TV show or movie and why?
Watching good legal dramas is a favourite hobby. I grew up watching LA Law and Law and Order. I was inspired by characters who were articulate, persuasive and quick on their feet. I also love a good twist!
