Elli is a lawyer in our police misconduct team. She brings an extensive knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system to represent those abused by the police.
An intimate knowledge of the Criminal Justice System
Elli’s background is working as a criminal defence solicitor-advocate, defending clients accused of some of the most serious criminal charges heard by the Victorian courts. Her experience as a defence advocate gives her valuable insight into representing clients against the police and the powers of the State. It has given Elli an extensive knowledge of both criminal procedure and police methodologies used in investigations. Elli has a variety of experience in the summary, indictable and appellate jurisdictions, as well as appearing for clients at IBAC and other inquests.
Challenging the abuses of power
Elli is passionate about working with marginalised communities and those who are unfairly treated and targeted by the police. Her experience has shown her how important it is to ensure that the power of the State, particularly the police, is constantly held to account and never left unchecked.
During her time as a defence advocate Elli has seen many malicious prosecutions and police misconduct both during the investigation stage, that targets the most vulnerable members of society, and also during the Court process, including the manipulation of and destruction of evidence by police.
Elli’s work focuses on protecting the fundamental rights of people who are treated unlawfully and pushing for systemic law reforms to improve police accountability. Elli fights to ensure that her client’s voices are heard because she believes everybody’s story should be told and that justice should be achievable to all.
